Been using chopsticks since I was 5. Been told I hold it weird but it works for me. I mainly eat with only chopsticks even with cake. I have chopsticks always in my lunch bag.
Oh yay!,I've tried soo hard to use chopsticks the real way..but failed every time..But!,YOUR tutorial helped me!! So right now I'm eating homemade Goka Makala and "slaying" the chopsticks ;) ~Thanks SOO much! ♡
Guys, I thought I was holding chopsticks properly, but I wasn't! LOL! No wonder I struggled picking up food! What great tips! Thanks so much for a thoroughly informative and entertaining episode my friends! Congratulations, Sinichi! You won!
Thank you for posting this video. I've watched a few videos on how to use chopsticks, but it was this video that helped put it all together and now I use them all the time.
When I was 2 years old a very nice Asian lady taught me to use chop sticks at a restaurant my mother used to go to 2-3 times a week in Houston Texas. That was 1982. I've used them the right way all my life apparently.
Thank you for the help. I used to use chop sticks all the time and for whatever reason just drifted away. Now that I have a bit of nerve damage it is much more difficult to learn their use all over again. Oh well. Practice, practice, practice! At first, I thought I must be have been having some kind of weird flash back or something. The background music that I was hearing was awfully familiar. It took me only a few seconds to figure out that the song was from 1963! It was recorded by Allan Sherman and was entitled ""Hello Muddah, Hello Fadduh (A Letter from Camp)". I listened to it on the radio when it was first released and have never stopped loving it. Especially, since I went to summer camps and sometimes, it was not as much fun as our parents promised. We did have some hardships along the way but, in the end, we actually did have a lot of fun. Thanks for the memories, too, I think. LOL
Great lesson! Thankfully, I think I've been doing fairly well with my chopsticks. What a relief! One of my friends told me that one of the hardest things to pick up is melting ice cubes, like out of a glass of water. They are pretty slippery! It was fun to see Justin again in the video. Looks like he was a good student for the lesson, too, although it is hard to use chopsticks without an opposable thumb. Poor Justin.
+Erin Uber haha. Now if Justin could use chopsticks, I would definitely film him and that would probably get millions of views! Come on Justin. You can do it!
+TabiEats Not at all. But I like to use. I like more the natural bamboo stiks. I hate plastic ones. EWWW specialy for RAMEN SOMMEN YAKISOBA UDON and SOBA. hehehehehe Cheers!
Justin is paying attention to your tutorial here 4:16 so cute Back home, or back in Taiwan, the hashioki is placed in a different direction. It's vertical rather than horizontal, interesting how it's different in different cultures
It's funny, I always thought I used chopsticks wrong. I was taught to hold it like a pencil and I hold a pencil different than most. But after watching how you guys use them I'm not as far off as I thought lol but still not perfect.
Thanks for the lesson, I've never been able to use chopsticks right maybe now I will be able to. Going to practice so I'm ready when I come to Japan. :)
My family is mostly American and Filipino, so it's pretty much either eating with forks and knives or eating with your hands with no in-betweens. My mother almost *always* eats rice with her hands! I think I'm the only one who really uses chopsticks regularly. Not sure how I'd fair with a bowl of dried beans but I might give it a go :)
Sensei, I've a question. can i try using chopsticks while eating scramble eggs. i mean, whatever food i make like scramble eggs, vegges anything..we can eat them using chopsticks?
My dad gave me a regular pair of chopsticks since I was 4 and had me figure it out all on my own LOL. I’m so jealous of those kids who had those lucky helpers
My mom had me do the bean challenge even though I use a fork and knife every time I have dinner at home or at a restaurant, but learning how to use chopsticks is very essential if you are in a Asian restaurant.
Im used to resting the bottom chopstick on my middle finger and holding the top stick with only my pointer and thumb..trying it this way the bottom stick wants to slide up my ring finger and it cramps my hand.. like learning all over again.
TabiEats ha ha ok I will do that lol, James never tried Sushi and he promised me he would coz it's one of my favourite foods so think will vlog it and I will shout out u both for teaching me how to hold the chopsticks properly and not stabbing the sushi like i used to lol
TabiEats ha ha I will for sure lol ...now i feel like sushi lol too just thinking about it, James never ate fish till recently now he is warming up to the idea of trying sushi so am thrilled...lol promise no stabbing now i learned how to use chopsticks the proper way :)
I personally love chopsticks, so I had eaten a lot of dishes with chopsticks. I can pretty much hold any food, hamburger, pizza, cake, popcorn, you name it, I had hold it hahaha. Also I master the skills for what to do and what to not and I think you guys can teach more of this table manners like tatebashi, watashibashi, kakikomibashi (Goku from DragonBall to this a lot), saguribashi, nigiribashi, waribashi, to people to learn more about Japanese culture and how to properly eat and show respect and dedication to the rising sun nation. :) Love to Japan Forever
I normally have a set of chopsticks to keep me in good practice of using them. I actually like using them when I go to Chinese or Japanese restaurants. Wish you both were here so we could go to Chinatown in Washington DC!
Hahaha! Good job to both the student and the sensei, that challenge looked hard! I actually got out some chopsticks so I could practice while I watched the video because my chopsticks form needs HELP! i might just have to have sushi for dinner so I can practice more ;-)
I've watched many videos on how to use chop sticks. This was the best. Because you explained so much more of the regulations. I noticed though, that during some of the presentation you had chopsticks in different forms. The ones you used for your "bean challenge" seemed to be flattened on the inner side. I've never seen chopsticks like that haveing only those from restaurants here in the US. Are there, then, different sytles of chopsticks? Some meant for just the average American style restaurant food and other's for many other occasions? I would love to know.
+Terry Lyle glad you think so! Actually it only looks flattened due to camera trickery or something because we've actually used the same chopsticks throughout the video except during the disposable chopsticks part. There are many varieties of chopsticks but they are basically the same. The disposable wooden ones are squared off but the non-disposable ones are usually rounded.
Ok, you guys read my mind! The day you uploaded this we went to eat sushi. I was thinking "I need to ask the guys (that's you) to show the proper way to eat with chopsticks and how to hold them correctly". I do ok but I know I could do better. Thanks for reading my mind! Lol
+Nicole Romero haha! Well SAtoshi is the best teacher ever! I've been using chopsticks all my life, but i never knew about those other stuff until I met him.
Hi guys. New subscriber here. I love your kind eyes. I'm about to try your low carb bread recipe. Thank you for this video. I have always wanted to learn how to use chopsticks. I have to practice practice practice lol
I should have watched this before I arrived in Hong Kong! haha Ive mastered my own way of doing it. But I have noticed how everyone has their own way of doing it. It's wonderful to watch.
+TabiEats I am yes! We arrived on Wednesday and leave on Wednesday night. It's been amazing. We have been discussing going to Japan in future too. There will be some vlogs of our trip, I have been inspired by your trip and life vlogs :)
Thanks for the lesson because every time I try and use chopsticks at my Vietnamese friend's house, she takes them away from me and says, "oh I forgot you can't use them" and hands me a fork lol 😊 I must have been really bad but thought I was doing okay lol
I see people in the comments finding it hard to balance the chopsticks on just their ring finger and my advice for that is to place the chopstick near the top joint of your finger so it has a dent to rest on and when your thumb crosses over to use the top chopstick use the bottom of it to tightly grip the chopstick
LOL ...STUDENT "WINS" 🏆 🍚🍜🍥🍛....🎆🎇🎉 Great Job...both 👍 Thanks so much 💕 ....i was doing it Right...but i did learn how to pick up and put down ... Between meals...👌
My mother thanks you for this video. I used to humiliate her whenever we visited Japan because my chopsticks technique is so appalling. Maybe I can finally get her approval for my table manners. Have a great weekend!
interesting to know ..i used it always the wrong way all the time. But i have my way to used them which quite works too ..But Thanks for this... Justin was Watching too ,so funny.😂
omg the bean challenge.....when I was taking Chinese classes my teacher was teaching us how to use chopsticks (cause most of my class never bothered to use them) and she made us do the bean challenge! I won (yay those Asian "skills) my classmates were so mad. Another thing I find interesting is that chopsticks in China are usually longer than in Japan. So when I went to Japan I fumbled a bit with the chopsticks at first cause I was used to them being longer and fatter at the end than skinnier at the end and shorter.
Nice Video! I find it very difficult to find the sweet spot to make the grip. I usually end up adjusting it a lot until the points of the chopsticks could touch. Most of the time it just sits in my hand like "Um so what do we do now?" hehe
Of all the “how to use chopstick” videos I’ve watched, yours helped me the most! Thank you! 🥢
Wwwwwuwwwwwewewwe
Its like midnight and I'm over here with a thin sharpie and marker practicing 😂

Been using chopsticks since I was 5. Been told I hold it weird but it works for me. I mainly eat with only chopsticks even with cake. I have chopsticks always in my lunch bag.
Jan Leoung I dont know why but me too I feel more comfortable eating with them. Plus I dont like metal utensils, they have a taste.
Fernder Tkbe nobody asked you too you dumb bitch . Buahaha
+Sakura Spring haha! He's always teaching me Japanese things. I'm too "Hawaiian".
Oh yay!,I've tried soo hard to use chopsticks the real way..but failed every time..But!,YOUR tutorial helped me!! So right now I'm eating homemade Goka Makala and "slaying" the chopsticks ;) ~Thanks SOO much! ♡

I’ve been doing it wrong all these years 😆 I’ve always watched and wondered! Thank you lovelies 😊
Very good video! I also liked how you put a bit of Japanese etiquette in the middle.
Glad you enjoyed this one!
Thank you for making this video! I can practice using beans to get better control. You both are wonderful!
Thank you for posting this video. I've watched a few videos on how to use chopsticks, but it was this video that helped put it all together and now I use them all the time.
+Paul Trahan I'm so happy that this video could help!
I started to use chopsticks to slow down eating. So it works!!! Thanks to show us how to use properly.
You are simply the best! thanks for showing us how to use them
The bean challenge look's very difficult.
+Kenomix3 thanks so much! The bean challenge was quite fun but yes, it was challenging!
You guys are brilliant. I love watching your videos.
Justin looked adorable learning eveything about ohashi! LOL
congrats, shinichi! but satoshi is still the best sensei!! 😜
+crispadilha oh yeah, Satoshi is the master sensei and will always be. lol
When I was 2 years old a very nice Asian lady taught me to use chop sticks at a restaurant my mother used to go to 2-3 times a week in Houston Texas. That was 1982. I've used them the right way all my life apparently.
Thanks for showing us this!! Great video!
+Cheryl K (CherylsHomeCooking) yay! make sure you practice so Satoshi can give you 5 stars!
Thank you for the help. I used to use chop sticks all the time and for whatever reason just drifted away. Now that I have a bit of nerve damage it is much more difficult to learn their use all over again. Oh well. Practice, practice, practice!

Keep practicing my friend and one day, you'll have no problems and no more pain! We promise!
TabiEats he strained his hand before this thats why
it gets better. try eating as many meals as possible or just picking random stuff up
Dipper
My mom (Japanese) would always make us kids do the bean (or sometimes peas) challenge. Good for practice
My grandparents have taught me since childhood to use OHASHI.
Nice lesson! Guys!
+Ernesto Tani thanks! You probably use ohashi better than me!
+TabiEats Not at all. But I like to use. I like more the natural bamboo stiks. I hate plastic ones. EWWW specialy for RAMEN SOMMEN YAKISOBA UDON and SOBA. hehehehehe Cheers!

+Amy Chou (AmichanC) yes it really is interesting to see the differences.
me: doing what the video says very slowly at the table
parents: wtf are you doing
me: uuuuhhhhh
You are so detailed that the dog who is watching intently will learn how to use it.
paper chopsticks holder is a good idea!! i will do it when i use wooden chopsticks!
Well Ive been using the right way though Ive never been in a situation where I needed the "manners". Thank you for a wonderful video.
I've never had a proper lesson. I've basically faked my way through. So thank you for this!!
+Peggy Christie glad we could help!
I love using chopsticks. Didn't know there was a formal way of using them, good to know! :)
Thanks for showing me how to use 🥢🥢
Thanks for posting this video, it was super helpful. I am finally using them correctly.
Thanks for sharing the proper way of picking them up and down. Arigato!
that dog is absolutely adorable
@6:47, if Satoshi put his chopsticks down, turned to Sinichi and declare "You,beginner luck!"
I'd have died laughing :)
It's funny, I always thought I used chopsticks wrong. I was taught to hold it like a pencil and I hold a pencil different than most. But after watching how you guys use them I'm not as far off as I thought lol but still not perfect.
+MScat1228 yay! you were doing it right all this time!
Thank you guys very much.
Thanks for the lesson, I've never been able to use chopsticks right maybe now I will be able to. Going to practice so I'm ready when I come to Japan. :)

Oh I was taught like this when I was about 8. Good to know that is a good grip
My dad gave me a regular pair of chopsticks since I was 4 and had me figure it out all on my own LOL. I’m so jealous of those kids who had those lucky helpers
Awesome video. Thank you. Very useful for me.

Using chopstick is like a crane game
thank you from ISRAEL (:
I had to get a pair from the kitchen to see how I do it. Awesome, but I could do with practice.
+Helen Loney Good luck! Maybe Satoshi will give you a 5!
I see people in the comments finding it hard to balance the chopsticks on just their ring finger and my advice for that is to place the chopstick near the top joint of your finger so it has a dent to rest on and when your thumb crosses over to use the top chopstick use the bottom of it to tightly grip the chopstick

Great Job...both 👍

My mother thanks you for this video. I used to humiliate her whenever we visited Japan because my chopsticks technique is so appalling. Maybe I can finally get her approval for my table manners. Have a great weekend!
+Yoshiko Yeto that's so great to hear! Practice and Satoshi just might give you a 5!
+TabiEats Ha ha, I have a feeling my mom's a harsher judge than Satoshi. I'll let you know if my mom thinks my technique is better now. 🍴✨
Yoshiko Yeto haha! Say hello to your mom for us!
Why am I watching this. I already know how to use chopsticks😂😂
Oh, gracious winner, ne~
I like it very useful
Thank you!
My finger hurts but I think I got it down XD I really want to learn how to use it.
Practice makes perfect! Good luck!
Love you guys! Thanks a lot!
Camp Grenada playing in the background

Thank you, thank you! Are chopsticks with flat sides easier to use than round ones?
+RPG Goddess the flat ones are definitely easier than round ones. But only with certain foods though.
thanks this helped me so much! i lived in japan for 7 years but i can't use chopsticks and that was very shameful.
Really helped thx
LOL, now I want beans to check how long would it take me. LOL

+Ruthy Quiban yes, I have this bad habit of not using my index finger. Odd but true. As long as it works my friend. :)
omg the bean challenge.....when I was taking Chinese classes my teacher was teaching us how to use chopsticks (cause most of my class never bothered to use them) and she made us do the bean challenge! Cool now i know how to use Chopsticks even though my 1St try was pretty Bad and after the 9th try i was pretty good at it
Trying to take this seriously but can't stop laughing at the dog....
Thanks 😊
Great tutorial! Thank you for posting in my subreddit RUclips_Tutorials!
Nice Video! I find it very difficult to find the sweet spot to make the grip. I usually end up adjusting it a lot until the points of the chopsticks could touch. Most of the time it just sits in my hand like "Um so what do we do now?" hehe
